The battle for promotion to play Western Province Super League C rugby next season is heating up as both Sir Lowrians RFC and Strand United won their respective Top 9 Promotion League fixtures at the weekend.
Gordon’s Bay Pioneers’ Pool B fixture was rescheduled as a result of the ongoing taxi strike. The local team will be in action today (Wednesday 9 August).
Sir Low made it two wins from two games with a narrow 18-15 victory over Whistling Wheels RFC in Sir Lowry’s Pass on Saturday 5 August. Playmaker Randy Brinkhuis was on song with his kicking boot, slotting two penalties and a conversion, while Nathan Williams and David Erasmus crossed over the whitewash for five-pointers.
The victory builds on the Navy Train’s win a week before, when they toppled Titans RFC by 18-8.
The local lads, who ended the Northern League at the top of the log and unbeaten in nine games, head into this weekend full of confidence as they face Philippi outfit Young Wesley’s RFC in Sir Lowry’s Pass on Saturday (12 August).
Strand United also continued to display good form and intensity as they convincingly beat Manenberg Rangers RFC by 50-32 in front of a decent crowd at Abattoir Sports Grounds.
The bonus-point win included a brace by Kyle Finch and one try apiece for Jonathan Francke, Amir Oliver and Wesley Josephs.
It was United’s opening match in their Top 9 campaign, after finishing second on the log in the Northern League. They now face Gardens RFC in Oranjezicht this weekend.
In other results, St George’s RFC suffered a 34-13 loss to Durbell in a Super League A fixture in Durbanville. The Lulu Boys are now ninth on the log, recording five wins and six losses. They will enjoy a bye this weekend and will next host Maties at Gustrouw on Saturday 19 August.
In Super League B, All Saints’ winning streak came to end as Primrose RFC handed them a 22-13 defeat. Tries by Rhoden November and Hewston Petersen as well as a penalty by Marco Anderson were not enough for victory.
The Olla Boys are now preparing to host Kylemore RFC at Helderzicht Sports Grounds this Saturday.
Strand RFC defeated Kylemore RFC at Gustrouw in their Super League B fixture. The game ended 29-25 in the host’s favour, with tries by Lorenzo Pietersen, Dillon Moses, Ebrahim Fortuin, Thomas Taljaard and Diego Visagie, while Nathan Fransman slotted two conversions. Strand travel to Kraaifontein to face Hands & Heart RFC at the weekend.
In Super League C, Macassar RFC suffered a narrow one-point loss, goung down 25-24 to Hamediehs RFC. The MC Boys fought hard, losing in the final minutes courtesy of a penalty.
This weekend Macassar travels to Durbanville to face Morningstar RFC.
