Abalone worth hundreds of thousands of rands was seized by members of the Somerset West police after a high-speed chase on Saturday (8 June). According to Somerset West police spokesperson Sergeant Suzan Jantjies, police members followed up on a tip-off of abalone being transported from Sir Lowry’s Pass on the N2 around 08:00. “The vehicle, a gold Nissan Almera with one occupant, the driver, was spotted on the corner of the highway and Victoria Street,” she related. “Police attempted to pull the vehicle over, but the driver refused to stop. A chase ensued into the Khayelitsha area. The vehicle was found abandoned in Jafta K Masemola Street. Its believed the driver fled between the shacks.” While the suspect remained at large police confiscated five bags containing 458 units of abalone valued at R250 000. The abalone was handed over to the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment. Police have opened an inquiry.
