A Heavy police presence could be felt when \u201cunhappy\u201d residents from Nomzamo and the surrounding areas marched to the recently opened shopping centre in the area on Tuesday 12 April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Aggrieved residents are demanding a high percentage of employment at the centre than those coming from other areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Residents claim the majority of people employed in the centre come from outside and they want this to be rectified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With a keen eye from the police, the group gathered near ACJ Primary School in Nomzamo before marching through the streets to hand over their memorandum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On their previous march, the picketers also accused one major retailer of being \u201carrogant and racist\u201d when dealing with the issue of employment among locals, (\u201cJobless spark unrest\u201d City Vision<\/span> 31 March).<\/p>\n\n\n\n Athi Ndlovu (23), from Zola, told City Vision<\/span> they were aggrieved as they had also found their curriculum vitae (CV) dumped in a dustbin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWe are young, suffering and we also want employment. We have done our investigation and we know that most of these people are not from our areas,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ndlovu claimed some workers at the mall came as far as Gugulethu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWe have followed people after work, took their pictures and we saw them getting into taxis to their different areas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWe did this, so we can have tangible evidence that most of these people are not from here,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Another resident Siphenathi Mzini (29), from New Village, said she had even taken fingerprints and was waiting to receive a call of employment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAfter submitting my CV, I was called and told to go to Somerset where we filled in a form. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThere were about nine or 10 of us we\u2019re told to wait for their calls. Some have been called but I have been waiting since, not knowing what is happening,\u201d said an irate Mzini.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The marchers handed over their memorandum, which they demanded to have it answered within seven days.
