A group of children from Langa converged at Guga Sthebe Arts and Culture Centre in the area to enjoy an arts programme on Saturday 30 April. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The workshop which was named Waste to Arts programme was conducted by the City of Cape Town to upskilled the children on recycling. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Programme facilitator Luvuyo Mpoza said the aim of the project is to educate children about the significance of recycling. He described the workshop as a platform for children to unearth their skills<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cPart of the programme is to educate children about the importance of keeping the environment clean. We are discouraging illegal dumping. We want people to own their spaces,\u201d said Mpoza. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This is one of many City-run programmes in the Langa area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThere are various programmes that the City is conducting in Langa to empower the community. This is a third programme this year following Paint with Sand and Beads with Faith programmes,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He added that the age requirements to participate in the programme starts from eight years old and is free of charge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mpoza emphasised that to master the programme people need to keep 4R\u2019s which is rethink, reduce, reuse and recycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He says that the programme trains children to make wallets, bags, camp sheets and do collage painting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThese are simple things and also showing them how to take measurements. Currently we are using tetra pak, strings, glue, stapler, cardboard etc. but people can use whatever they want. After this workshop each participant will give him or her some equipment so that they can continue doing whatever they want at home for them,\u201d he stated. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
One of the participants, Oyintando Tiso (12) described the workshop as informative. She said she learnt a lot about recycling. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI learned how to sew and take measurements. I made a wallet and I\u2019m planning to learn to do other things like bag or skirt,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
