An activist has called on communities to denounce hate killings directed at lesbians and those who have different sexual orientation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This comes after a 27-year-old man reported to the Harare police on Monday 9 May for allegedly killing a 23-year-old man in Emsindweni, Makhaza in the early hours of the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The attack is believed to have happened after the accused realised that he had gotten involved into a romantic relationship with another man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Capt Siyabulela Vukubi, Harare police spokesperson, said they were called to the a scene where a body of a 23-year-old man was discovered lying on the ground. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAt that stage police registered an inquest docket as there were no signs that the deceased was killed. Yesterday (Monday) during the day a male person handed himself over to the police confessing that he had killed the deceased,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Community activist Funeka Soldaat believes the killing was as the results of \u201chate\u201d directed to a lesbian person. She called on authorities to ensure the matter ended with a jail term for the perpetrator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe really need to see justice being served on this case. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt must not be a norm to just kill another person and it ends there. Communities need to see the consequences of such actions,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Soldaat urged community leaders to preach the word that it is not \u201cright to kill people for their sexual orientation\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She called on churches, parents, homes and the society at large to denounce killing of other people because of their sexual preferences. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Vukubi said the 27-year-old has been remanded in police custody pending the case and his bail hearing.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
