While a pair of school shoes might seem like a small thing, it meant a lot for a group of learners from Stormont Madubela Community School in KTC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On Thursday 4 August, at least 306 learners each received a pair of school shoes from a leading insurance firm. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The hand-over ceremony was attended by Gugulethu police, Abathunywa Ministers Fraternity and Ward 38 councillor Gladstone Ntamo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
School principal Zola Shiyani expressed his gratitude to the company. The shoes will make a difference to the learners, he added, urged other businesses to come on board. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe are so happy for our children to have new school shoes. I believe the shoes will help them a lot because some of them wore sneakers and others had broken shoes,\u201d said Shiyani. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Shiyana, the majority of their learners come from disadvantaged families. \u201cThe majority of their mothers are unemployed young women. Most of their families are surviving on social grants and are unable to buy everything for their children,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Shiyani described Stormont Madubela as an independent school that survived through donations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Const Nomapha Homane, Social Crime coordinator for the Gugulethu Police Station, stated that every time the insurance company plans to do something in the community it contacts them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Homane stated that their aim is to support the underprivileged learners so that they do not to feel neglected. \u201cWe don\u2019t want the children dropping out at school because they do not have school shoes.
