Taiwan informal settlement residents in Site C were over the moon when they received new chemical toilets from the City of Cape Town on Tuesday 8 November. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
At least 342 toilets were delivered at DT and CT sections. Both areas are along the N2 freeway. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The toilets are cleaned with a powder that neutralises the scent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
CT resident Nomakholwa Khwethana said the toilets mean a lot to the community. She said they have struggled for several years to get decent toilets and it was the first time in the area\u2019s history that such toilets were made available. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI have been staying here for more than 15 years and we have never had toilets. We used to relieve ourselves along the N2 while others used the portable toilets. By having these toilets we feel honoured and safe,\u201d said Khwethana. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The mother of three said she wished they could also get new houses. She accused the City of ignoring them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ward 87 councillor Khayalethu Kama said he aims to bring back the dignity of the people. He described Taiwan as one of the oldest communities in Khayelitsha. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhen I came into the office in 2019 delivering the toilets in the area was one of my priorities. This area has existed for more than 20 years, but some areas still didn\u2019t have toilets,\u201d he stated. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kama said he felt emotional when the residents expressed their gratitude to him and stated that the installation of the new toilets in the area was a short-term solution. He said he intends to see the people from the area relocated to the new houses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kama stated that the housing development in the area is not clear. He urged the community to look after the toilets. \u201cIt is the community\u2019s responsibility to ensure that the toilets are safe and protected,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
