The Western Cape has nine police stations of the top 30 murder stations throughout the country, with Nyanga taking the top spot locally at position three. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Second Quarter of the 2022\/2023 Financial year (July to September 2022) statistics were released by Minister of Police, Bheki Cele, on Wednesday 23 November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nyanga is leading the province with 80 murder cases with an increase of 31 cases as compared to the same period last year when it had 49 cases registered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is closely followed by Delft in position four with 69 cases, the same number as last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At position five is Kraaifontein with 54 cases, with a difference of 10 cases less as compared to 64 during the same period last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Philippi East closely follows at position eight with 54 cases an increase of 28 as compared to 26 cases registered during the same period. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Harare occupies position nine with 53 cases, a decrease of two cases as compared to 55 cases registered during the same period last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Khayelitsha Police Station is at position 12 with 48 cases, a decrease of five cases, as compared to 53 cases registered during the same period last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mfuleni closely follows in position 13 with 46 cases, a decrease of 22 cases as compared to 68 cases registered during the same period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gugulethu is at position 27 on the national list with 36 cases, a decrease of seven cases as compared to 43 cases during the same period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Samora Machel closes the provincial list at position 29 with 34 cases registered, with a decrease of three cases compared to 37 cases during the same period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
More shockingly, Cele said over 10 000 rape cases were opened with the police, between July and September this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cFrom a sample of 8 227 rape incidents that were perused, it was determined that 5 083 which is 62% of these incidents occurred at the residence of the victims or perpetrators. A total of 1 651 of the rape incidents occurred at public places such as streets, parks and beaches,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cele added that 69 people were raped at abandoned buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He revealed that Mpumalanga was the only province to report a decrease in rape incidents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Inanda police station in KwaZulu-Natal, Mthatha in the Eastern Cape and Delft in the Western Cape are the three top stations with the highest rape cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cele said buses, taxis, trains and other modes of public transport, were the third most likely places of occurrence for rape incidents.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
