{"id":44279,"date":"2023-03-02T09:27:42","date_gmt":"2023-03-02T07:27:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/cityvision\/disability-on-centre-stage-20230301\/"},"modified":"2025-03-20T01:37:57","modified_gmt":"2025-03-19T23:37:57","slug":"disability-on-centre-stage-20230301","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/cityvision\/disability-on-centre-stage-20230301\/","title":{"rendered":"Disability takes centre-stage in awareness campaign held in Khayelitsha"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Attempts to integrate people living with disabilities into society received a much-needed impetus when Ward 18 hosted a Disability Awareness programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Held at the Blue Hall in Site C, on Friday 24 February, the programme put disabled people under one roof to discuss their challenges. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They were also motivated not to be ashamed of their conditions, but to come out of their closets. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They were also reminded that they were ordinary people with certain limb defects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ward councillor Ntomboxolo Kopman said the programme formed part of developmental programmes in the ward. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said as part of their ward allocation, a portion of the money went towards people living with disabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe had non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and other stakeholders that also helped them about financial matters. Societies need to do is be able to accommodate them. There are still many matters that need adjusting. However, slowly but surely, we shall arrive there,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bantwini raised concerns about taxis that were not user-friendly to people living with disabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs people with disabilities, we differ and our challenges may not be the same.
