The community of Endlovini informal settlement is calling on the City of Cape Town to remove the mounting rubbish along the busy Mew Way Road. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Incensed residents say the rubbish is a health hazard and causes a lot of stench in the area. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
It has been over three weeks since the last collection, according to the residents. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
While the blame has been put on the shoulders of the City, residents also criticise local leaders for failing to take remedial actions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
A resident, who calls himself Shakes said Mew Way had become a dumping zone, with rubbish in every spot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI don\u2019t know what happened to the people who used to clean the area. We don\u2019t see them anymore. I realised earlier last week, while coming from work, that there is a problem here,\u201d said Shakes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
He stated it was the first time, in a long time, that residents faced such a challenge. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said two years ago, council workers stopped cleaning without anyone informing the community. (\u201cRubbish left to pile up\u201d, City Vision<\/span>, 05 August 2021).<\/p>\n\n\n\n A meat vendor along the road, who only described herself as MaMbongo, said the dirt affects their businesses, with customers dwindling. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIt\u2019s been almost a month since the rubbish was not collected. It causes flies and unbearable stench,\u201d she stated. <\/p>\n\n\n\n MaMbongo said the conditions are deteriorating daily, with most dumping happening at night.
