A third high school in Lower Crossroads is under construction, and the first phase is expected to be completed soon. Ward 35 councillor Mboniswa Chitha described the construction of the school as a blessing in disguise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said the school will accommodate the learners who are on the Western Cape Education Department\u2019s (WCED) waiting list. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere are many learners in the area who didn\u2019t get to school last year. Most of them are still on the waiting list. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey are the ones who will be prioritised here.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chitha expected the first phase to be completed in June, although the department indicated September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He mentioned that the construction of the school would not only improve the area but change the lives of many people. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chitha said many local people, including sub-contractors, are benefiting from the construction of the school. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have two primary schools and two high schools in my ward. We need more schools to be erected because the population is increasing every day.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WCED spokesperson Bronagh Hammond confirmed the building project was in progress and the first phase would be completed in September. She said the site was handed over to the contractor on Monday 12 February, the first phase consisting of six classrooms, an administration facility and ablution facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is expected to be completed by the end of September with the rest of the phases to follow. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe school will be constructed in several phases, comprising 30 classrooms and a hall.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hammond didn\u2019t specify when the school would be completed. She said the total estimated project cost is R114 million.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
