The South African Police Service
\nin the Western Cape is on the hunt for the fatal shooting of one of its
\nofficers, who was killed during a crime-prevention
\noperation on Wednesday 13 June in Khayelitsha.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The provincial police spokesperson, Brig Novela Potelwa, said the 30-year-old
\nconstable was based at Khayelitsha Police Station. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She said the reports from
\nthe scene indicate that members of Khayelitsha Police Station\u2019s Crime
\nPrevention Unit were conducting a stop-and-search operation in Q-Block at
\napproximately 21:30, when they came under fire from an armed suspect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe police have since launched a manhunt for the suspect.\u201d<\/div>\n

\u201cThey have opened a murder and
\nattempted-murder docket. The investigation has since been taken over by
\nDirectorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) investigators. Psychosocial
\nsupport for the colleagues of the deceased member is currently being provided
\nby [police] employee health-and-wellness practitioners.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Potelwa said the identity of the deceased constable will be released once his
\nnext of kin has been informed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Western Cape provincial
\ncommissioner Lt-Gen Thembisile Patekile has given his assurance that no
\nresources would be spared in bringing the perpetrator to book. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is
\ndisheartening that police officers who are deployed to bring safety to
\ncommunities find themselves targeted by criminals,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
