{"id":297584,"date":"2026-06-12T11:53:07","date_gmt":"2026-06-12T09:53:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/cityvision\/sa-open-chess-championship-returns-to-cape-town-in-2026\/"},"modified":"2026-06-12T12:11:39","modified_gmt":"2026-06-12T10:11:39","slug":"sa-open-chess-championship-returns-to-cape-town-in-2026","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/cityvision\/sa-open-chess-championship-returns-to-cape-town-in-2026\/","title":{"rendered":"SA Open Chess Championship returns to Cape Town in 2026"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>South Africa&#8217;s premier open chess tournament is set to return to Cape Town from 27 June to 5 July, when the <a href=\"https:\/\/chessa.co.za\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/chessa.co.za\/\">South African Open Chess Championship<\/a> takes centre stage at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dfmalan.com\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.dfmalan.com\/\">DF Akademie High School <\/a>for nine days of competitive play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hosted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/westerncapechess.org\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/westerncapechess.org\/\">Western Cape Chess Association<\/a> under the auspices of Chess South Africa, and proudly supported by the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, the championship will offer a total prize fund of R159 100 across multiple sections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-tournament-steeped-in-history\">A tournament steeped in history<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With a proud history dating back to 1962, the South African Open remains one of the nation&#8217;s flagship chess events, drawing elite competitors, emerging talent, coaches, arbiters, officials, and chess enthusiasts from across the country and abroad. Players are expected to travel from all nine provinces, as well as from international destinations, with the event also anticipated to generate economic and tourism benefits for Cape Town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tournament forms part of South Africa&#8217;s official national chess calendar and offers both FIDE-rated and Chess South Africa-rated competition, enabling participants to earn internationally recognised rating points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-sections-and-competition-categories\">Sections and competition categories<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This year&#8217;s championship will feature a wide range of sections catering to players of all levels and ages:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Championship Section<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ladies Section<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Advanced Section<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Intermediate Section<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Junior Sections<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Age Group Sections (Under 7 to Under 17)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>South African Blitz Championship<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A pathway to international glory for juniors<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The junior age-group sections carry particular significance, serving as a qualification pathway to prestigious international competitions. This event showcases the strength and growth of chess in South Africa while creating meaningful opportunities for players of all ages to compete at the highest level. The championship is especially significant for our junior players, many of whom will be competing for qualification to prestigious African and World Schools Championships.
