{"id":297514,"date":"2026-06-09T13:38:57","date_gmt":"2026-06-09T11:38:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/cityvision\/?p=297514"},"modified":"2026-06-09T13:59:30","modified_gmt":"2026-06-09T11:59:30","slug":"samora-machel-church-robbery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/cityvision\/samora-machel-church-robbery\/","title":{"rendered":"Armed men rob church congregants during service in Samora Machel"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/cityvision\/samora-machel-clinic-construction-progresses-ahead-of-schedule\/\" type=\"post\" id=\"294836\">Samora Machel<\/a> community leader has condemned the actions of armed men who entered a church during a service and robbed congregants of their belongings and the church&#8217;s sound system on Sunday, 7 June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-crime-in-samora-machel-remains-a-concern\">Crime in Samora Machel remains a concern<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The leader, who requested anonymity for fear of harassment, described the robbery as &#8220;unholy&#8221; and said crime in the area had reached alarming levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It shocked everyone because we regard the church as a safe space. We never expected criminals to rob church members during a service. The church is respected as a holy place. Most people come from Christian families and are taught to respect the church. Where was the conscience of these criminals when they robbed the congregants?&#8221; he asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He urged law enforcement authorities to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-service-interrupted-and-congregants-robbed\">Service interrupted and congregants robbed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A video circulating on social media shows congregants singing with microphones before suddenly stopping and taking their seats. Moments later, a man carrying a firearm appears in the church. He can be heard greeting the congregants before instructing them to hand over their cellphones and threatening to shoot them if they did not comply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-police-open-business-robbery-case\">Police open business robbery case<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Western Cape police spokesperson Sgt <a href=\"https:\/\/southernmail.co.za\/news\/2021-09-15-sergeant-twigg-branches-out\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/southernmail.co.za\/news\/2021-09-15-sergeant-twigg-branches-out\/\">Wesley Twigg<\/a> said Samora Machel police had registered a business robbery case for investigation following the incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;According to reports, two armed suspects entered the church building and robbed congregants of their personal belongings and a sound system belonging to the church before fleeing the scene,&#8221; said Twigg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyone with information about the
