{"id":296431,"date":"2026-04-16T17:17:06","date_gmt":"2026-04-16T15:17:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/cityvision\/?p=296431"},"modified":"2026-04-17T10:10:27","modified_gmt":"2026-04-17T08:10:27","slug":"khayelitsha-shooting-ilitha-park","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/cityvision\/khayelitsha-shooting-ilitha-park\/","title":{"rendered":"Khayelitsha shooting: Man gunned down near Ilitha Park spaza shop"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Lingelethu West police have opened a murder case after an unidentified man was shot and killed near a spaza shop in Ilitha Park, <a href=\"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/cityvision\/sandf-in-khayelitsha\/\" type=\"post\" id=\"296058\">Khayelitsha<\/a> on Thursday 16 April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No arrests have been made and the circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-unidentified-man-killed-in-khayelitsha-shooting\">Unidentified man killed in Khayelitsha shooting<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Provincial police spokesperson <a href=\"https:\/\/za.linkedin.com\/in\/thembakazi-mpendukana-39a6692ba\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/za.linkedin.com\/in\/thembakazi-mpendukana-39a6692ba\">Thembakazi Mpendukazi <\/a>said officers responded to a complaint about a shooting on Msobomvu Street in Ilitha Park at approximately 9:00am. \u201cUpon arrival, they found the body of an unidentified man with gunshot wounds.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was declared dead at the scene,\u201d said Mpendukazi.\u00a0<br><br>A local resident, who asked not to be named for fear of harassment, said he believed the attackers may have known the victim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAccording to the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Somalia\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Somalia\">Somali<\/a> shop owner, the deceased was buying something when the assailants attacked him. They shot him several times and fled the scene. They did not take his car or wallet, which makes me think they knew him,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-community-suspects-link-to-extortion-in-khayelitsha-shooting\">Community suspects link to extortion in Khayelitsha shooting<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The resident further speculated that the victim may have been linked to extortion activities in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think it was a robbery. He might have been one of the extortionists, possibly collecting money from the shop. Our community is under siege from extortionists,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added that people who saw the body before it was covered did not recognise the victim and believe he was not from the
