{"id":295523,"date":"2026-02-22T16:47:43","date_gmt":"2026-02-22T14:47:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/cityvision\/?p=295523"},"modified":"2026-02-22T16:47:44","modified_gmt":"2026-02-22T14:47:44","slug":"samora-machel-firearms-arrest-spaza-shop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/cityvision\/samora-machel-firearms-arrest-spaza-shop\/","title":{"rendered":"Foreign nationals arrested after guns found in their shop"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Two foreign nationals(33 and 37) from <a href=\"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/cityvision\/samora-machel-clinic-construction-progresses-ahead-of-schedule\/\" type=\"post\" id=\"294836\">Samora Machel<\/a> were arrested for possession of prohibited firearms on Saturday, 21 February, after police discovered two firearms with ammunition in their spaza shop on Tsimani Street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-illegal-firearms-in-samora-machel-discovered-during-intelligence-driven-search\">Illegal firearms in Samora Machel discovered during intelligence-driven search<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Provincial police spokesperson Constable<a href=\"https:\/\/za.linkedin.com\/in\/ndakhe-gwala-795ba5b6\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/za.linkedin.com\/in\/ndakhe-gwala-795ba5b6\"> Ndakhe Gwala<\/a> said members of Operation Lockdown III conducted a search following intelligence about firearms allegedly concealed at the address.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey found two foreign nationals at the premises and, during the search, officers recovered one 9mm pistol with eight rounds of ammunition and one CZ 75 Beretta handgun with 10 rounds of ammunition. Both firearms had no serial numbers,\u201d said Gwala. He added that the suspects are expected to make their first court appearance on Monday, 23 February, at the Athlone Magistrate\u2019s Court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-residents-call-for-continued-police-operations-in-crime-hit-area\">Residents call for continued police operations in crime-hit area<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A community member, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisal, described Samora Machel as one of the more dangerous areas, saying crime is rife in the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe support the officers for what they are doing. We want them to continue searching other spaza shops. It is clear that some shop owners also possess illegal firearms,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She identified substance abuse, murder, and gender-based violence as some of the criminal activities prevalent in the area.
