{"id":295498,"date":"2026-02-21T11:07:42","date_gmt":"2026-02-21T09:07:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/cityvision\/?p=295498"},"modified":"2026-02-21T13:57:13","modified_gmt":"2026-02-21T11:57:13","slug":"philippi-east-murder-arson-extortion-lower-crossroads","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/cityvision\/philippi-east-murder-arson-extortion-lower-crossroads\/","title":{"rendered":"Philippi-East murder and arson case linked to alleged extortion"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Philippi-East police&nbsp;are investigating a case of murder and arson&nbsp;following an incident at the corner of <a href=\"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/cityvision\/no-arrests-yet-following-deadly-philippi-barber-shop-shooting-20240919\/\" type=\"post\" id=\"42339\">Sheffield Road <\/a>and Somi Crescent, Lower&nbsp;Crossroads where an unknown man was allegedly gunned down after he set alight a Somali-owned shop on Friday,&nbsp;20 February.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-police-response\">Police response<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Provincial police spokesperson Const <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/CapeTimes\/posts\/police-spokesperson-ndakhe-gwala-said-a-35-year-old-man-was-taken-into-custody-s\/1501286855133086\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/CapeTimes\/posts\/police-spokesperson-ndakhe-gwala-said-a-35-year-old-man-was-taken-into-custody-s\/1501286855133086\/\">Ndakhe Gwala<\/a> said the officers responded to a complaint and on arrival they found a shop&nbsp;engulfed&nbsp;in flames.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAccording to reports an unknown man came to the store at around 12:30 demanding money from the new owner. When the shopkeeper refused, the deceased threw a petrol bomb inside the shop and fled on foot. His body was found a few meters away from the shop with gunshot wounds on his upper body, face, and arm,\u201d said Gwala. She stated that the circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation,&nbsp;and&nbsp;no arrest has been made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-possible-motive\">Possible motive<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A\u00a0Community leader who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of harassment,\u00a0claimed\u00a0the incident was extortion\u00a0related. \u201cThe issue of extortion in our communities is a problem. It is all over. According to the information that we received from the friends of the shop owner they said the deceased went to the shop to collect the money and the shop owner refused, out of anger the deceased torched the shop,\u201d explained the leader. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-investigation-status\">Investigation status<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>However, he said it is not clear who shot
