{"id":266791,"date":"2025-10-16T11:12:12","date_gmt":"2025-10-16T09:12:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/cityvision\/?p=266791"},"modified":"2025-10-16T11:13:40","modified_gmt":"2025-10-16T09:13:40","slug":"nyanda-avenue-closed-for-repairs-after-sewage-pipe-collapse-in-makhaza","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/cityvision\/nyanda-avenue-closed-for-repairs-after-sewage-pipe-collapse-in-makhaza\/","title":{"rendered":"Nyanda Avenue closed for repairs after sewage pipe collapse in Makhaza"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.capetownetc.com\/news\/stormwater-infrastructure-flooding\/\">Nyanda Avenue<\/a> in Makhaza is temporarily closed for construction following the underground sewage pipe collapse last month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ward 96 councillor Lucky Mbiza said the collapse of the pipe has caused a traffic congestion because the motorists have to go to the other side of the road. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said it was necessary to close it because the road was damaged.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Just as you turn from <a href=\"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/cityvision\/four-taxi-drivers-killed-in-khayelitsha-and-philippi-amid-ongoing-taxi-turf-war\/\">Japhta K. Masemola<\/a> to join Nyanda Avenue, the whole side of the road collapses. It had a big hole. It was good to close the whole street then the motorists who are coming in that vicinity will turn the other way around,&#8221; said Mbiza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>foreign objects contributing\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He explained that the underground pipes are collapsing because they are outdated. However, he also suspects that population growth and the dumping of foreign objects into the drainage system are contributing factors.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mbiza stated that the only solution is for the City to gradually change the underground infrastructure before it gets worse. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A resident, Bukhosi Qutywa, who resides on the same street said he is happy with the upgrade citing that it will make things easier for them. He stated that the road started to show cracks in August. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Signs were there and the City employees came and put up red tape. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;They (City workers) came to repair it now after it collapsed and opened a big hole,&#8221; he said. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He stated that the construction has caused some disturbance particularly to those who are staying closer to Goal Supermarket. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Now we have to go down Japhta K. Masemola and join Nyanda Avenue on the other side.
