{"id":266185,"date":"2025-08-31T13:26:04","date_gmt":"2025-08-31T11:26:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/cityvision\/cape-town-records-over-27-million-traffic-offences-in-a-single-year\/"},"modified":"2025-08-31T13:27:45","modified_gmt":"2025-08-31T11:27:45","slug":"cape-town-records-over-27-million-traffic-offences-in-a-single-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/cityvision\/cape-town-records-over-27-million-traffic-offences-in-a-single-year\/","title":{"rendered":"Cape Town records over 2,7 million traffic offences in a single year"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The City of Cape Town\u2019s latest traffic statistics reveal a worrying rise in reckless driver behaviour, with motorists increasingly disregarding the rules of the road.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Between July 2024 and June 2025, the Traffic Service recorded more than 2,7 million offences, pointing to a continued culture of non-compliance despite consistent enforcement efforts.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-red-light-violations-on-the-rise\">Red-light violations on the rise<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most alarming increases was in motorists ignoring traffic signals. The Traffic Service recorded a 49% increase in drivers caught on camera running red lights.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis behaviour is reckless and dangerous,\u201d said Mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith. \u201cIgnore a red light and there is a chance you can cause a collision or hit a pedestrian.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other categories of driver behaviour also saw significant spikes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>30,3% increase in driving offences;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>15,1% increase in overloading. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-speeding-remains-a-major-threat\">Speeding remains a major threat<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Speeding continues to dominate the list of offences, with 1,84 million cases recorded over the year. According to Smith, \u201cRoad safety starts with the decisions made by road users. If you speed, there is a chance that you can lose control of your vehicle.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The statistics reflect the ongoing challenge of reducing reckless driving habits that place both motorists and pedestrians at risk.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-arrests-and-impoundments\">Arrests and impoundments<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Traffic officers also made 2 272 arrests in the past financial year. Of these:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>1 638 were for drunk driving (72%)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>259 for reckless and negligent driving (11%)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>375 for other offences, including murder, robbery, providing false information, and possession of stolen goods.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/tygerburger.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/towaway_78280.jpeg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Traffic officers clamp down as another motorist is pulled over for reckless driving.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-cost-of-non-compliance\">The cost of non-compliance<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, the Traffic Service impounded 12 224 vehicles \u2013 including minibus taxis, e-hailing cars, amaphela and buses \u2013 while 952 vehicles were towed away, representing a 61,4% increase compared to the previous year.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Smith noted that enforcement is often criticised as \u201ctargeting soft offences,\u201d but argued that the statistics prove otherwise.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTraffic enforcement is a highly contentious and emotive issue, and the biggest critics are often the biggest culprits,\u201d he said. \u201cToo many people are far too comfortable breaking the law, until they are held to account or until their actions cause harm.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The City also introduced a vertical lift truck earlier this year to strengthen its towing operations. The vehicle has already been used nearly 50 times to remove cars parked illegally or obstructing traffic.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/tygerburger.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/drunkdrivingtesting_78311.jpeg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Traffic officers on patrol as the City clamps down on reckless driver behaviour.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-call-for-accountability\">A call for accountability<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Smith emphasised that while enforcement is essential, real change depends on the choices made by individual road users.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur enforcement services are doing the work, but we have limited resources,\u201d he said. \u201cMuch of what we deal with is the result of a lack of personal accountability.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The City continues to appeal to motorists to respect traffic laws, warning that every red light skipped, every overloaded vehicle, and every act of reckless driving increases the risk of injury or death on Cape Town\u2019s
