The shooting and killing of a 37-year-old woman in Langa on Sunday 23 January has left the community reeling.

Abongile Mabusela was shot and killed by two unknown men near her home at Old Flats as she returned from the church. The barbaric act has left a bitter taste in the community, with some residents calling for the law to take its course.

Ward 52 councillor Thembelani Nyamakazi said the community is devastated by the incident.

He urged anyone who has information about the whereabouts of the perpetrators to inform the police.

“In this country it has become a norm for men to kill women. We need the government to impose stringent laws against the perpetrators. As the community we can’t rest till the culprits are brought to book,” said Nyamakazi.

He stated that Langa is terrorised by gangsters.

“We need police visibility. And we appealto all the community stakeholders to work together in order to fight crime. We need to reclaim our streets from the criminals,” he stated.

Provincial police spokesperson Sgt Wesley Twigg said the circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation.

He said a murder case docket was opened for investigation following a shooting and killing on Sunday 23 January at about 16:50 in Langa.

“Langa police were called to the crime scene where they found the victim with gunshot wounds to the head. The victim was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel. The suspect/s fled the scene and are yet to be arrested,” said Twigg.
