Life will never be the same for the Early Childhood Development centres (ECDs) in Ward 87 after receiving material from their ward councillor on Thursday 10 April.
At least 19 ECDs benefited from the event, held at Solomon Tshuku Community Hall.
The goods included playdough, five mattresses, fire and blanket extinguisher, children’s books, a skipping rope, two buckets with tap, among others.
Councillor Khayelethu Kama described the donation as a sign of appreciation of all the ECDs in his ward.
He said the goods were valued at R170 000 and purchased from his ward allocation budget. He praised the ECDs for doing a great job and described them as safe spaces for children.
“We don’t underestimate the job that is done by the ECDs. What they are doing is great and they deserve to be recognised. Instead of leaving a child with an uncle or neighbour, take him or her to the local crèche.”
According to Lindiwe Mlenga, principal of Bamanye Edu-care Lindiwe Mlenga in C Section, which has more than 50 children, she was exhilarated by the donation. She said it came at the right time.
“I didn’t expect some of the things we received, especially the bucket with tap and kids’ dough. These things will make our lives easier. Now we will be able to keep the water in the bucket; even if the water is suspended we won’t struggle.”
