Ward 86 councillor Xolani Diniso celebrated his birthday on Monday 29 September by spending some time with the senior citizens from his ward.

The celebration took place at Skhwenkwe Gymnasium where he donated an electric stove, food hampers, blankets, kettle and refreshments.

Diniso stated that it was the first time he organised such an event. He described it as a sign of appreciation. “Instead of going around socialising and buying expensive alcohol for friends, I decided to spend my day with the senior citizens. These are people who took care of us when we were younger. These are the people who made Lwandle what it is today,” said Diniso.

He dismissed the notion by other organisations in the wards that he was trying to buy votes for the upcoming local elections.

“If I was doing this for votes I would organise a bash for young people because they are the majority in the ward. The seniors are the minority. There is no way that I can win a ward because of senior citizens. The fact of the matter is that many people take the seniors for granted. They don’t give the respect where it is due. We are here today because of them. Our parents and our grandparents suffered a lot fighting for us to be where we are today,” said Diniso, adding that the seniors and young children are so close to his heart.

He stated that he intends to host the event annually.

Diniso emphasised that to those seniors who were not invited they will be given their chance next year. One of the senior citizens, Nomabhelu Nyangule (79) from Nomzamo, described the event as entertaining. She described Diniso as one of the best councillor’s that they ever had in the area. “Akekho ofana naye (No one is like him). He knows how to lead people. He listens to the people. We are blessed by

having him,” said Nyangule.
