560 service sites to be developed in ward 108, Mfuleni

At least 560 sites, in which underground infrastructure will be installed, have been allocated to Ward 108 in Mfuleni, and the elected contractor was levelling the ground.

Project underway

Ward councillor Nkosiphendule Lombi said the project started early this month. As soon as the contractor is finished levelling the ground, they will commence installing the underground infrastructure by mid-August, he said.

Full services promised

“The sites will be fully serviced. They will have flushing toilets, running water and electricity. The beneficiaries are from the informal settlements and backyarders.”

Lombi said the project was spearheaded by the City’s Department of Informal Settlements. He said the objective is to upgrade the informal settlements.

“We will verify all the beneficiaries to ensure that they are eligible to receive houses. What will happen is that the City will later build houses for them on their plots.” However, he said he had not yet identified which informal settlements were to benefit.

Completion timeline and phases

Lombi stated that the project is expected to be completed by May next year. He stated the project is part of Extension 1 and will be built in phases.

He urged the community to be patient and allow the process to take its course.

“The contractor started early this month. As soon as it finishes levelling the ground it will install the underground infrastructure. This is going to be a serviced site.”
