Members of the Gugulethu Development Forum (GDF) are saddened by the death of two children in a shack fire at NY29 on Sunday 6 February.
The deceased are between nine months and three years old. The cause of the fire is not clear at this stage.
GDF secretary Vincent Domingo said it is time for the government to speed up the housing process. He said if the family was staying in a proper structure they would still be alive.
According to him, the community is devastated by the incident.
“It is clear that the issue of shacks is a problem on its own. The family was staying in a shack at the back. But I don’t know how their mother survived during the incident,” he said.
Gugulethu Police Station spokesperson Sgt Sindisiwe Ngqele confirmed the incident. She said an inquest docket was opened. She said the fire started in the early morning on Sunday.
“The fire started at 01:45 in the morning. Two children died in a shack fire at NY29 in Gugulethu. One of the deceased is nine months old and other one is three year old. The cause of the fire is unknown,” said Ngqele.
