Officers from Harare Police Station are investigating a murder case, after the body of a 7-year-old girl was discovered a few metres away from her home in Kuyasa, Khayelitsha, on Wednesday 23 July.

Provincial police spokesperson Sgt Wesley Twigg confirmed the incident. The girl had gone missing on Tuesday 22 July in Nambuzane Street, Kuyasa in Khayelitsha, and an integrated team comprising the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS), the Dog Unit, Public Order Police Unit (POP), Crime Intelligence and Harare detectives went in search for her.

“The biological sniffer dog led the members to an address in Sindwadwa Street, Kuyasa, where the child was last seen,” Twigg said. “The dog reacted to blood on the mop and blood stains on the floor of the house, believed to be that of the child. An adult male and female were arrested in connection with the murder this afternoon (Wednesday 23 July).” He added they were due to appear in the Khayelitsha Magistrates’ Court on Friday 25 July.

Immediately after the body was discovered the community, from Kuyasa and neighbouring areas, gathered at Harare Police Station demanding the suspects “to rot in jail.”
A community leader, who refused to be named for fear of reprisals, described the killing as gruesome. A screwdriver was used to stab her multiple times, the source said.

“It is alleged the child was stabbed in the head and torso,” the source said. “Her body was discovered with the screwdriver stuck in the skull. She had several stab wounds to her body.” The source said a man and woman had been arrested in connection with the killing. They said they were not sure whether the two suspects were a couple or whether they were the victim’s parent or parents.
The community leader stated all the community needs is for justice to take its course.
