The Town Two Clinic in Town Two, Khayelitsha was temporarily closed after unknown men had stormed into the facility on Saturday night (31 January), went to security officers on duty and demanded they contact their boss to give them money.
Ward 93 councillor Thando Pimpi said, according to information he had received, an alleged extortionist contacted the company’s boss asking for money, which the boss refused to give.
“Then the uproar ensued and extortionists threatened to kill the security officers,” he said. “Since then the clinic has been closed until further notice. Yesterday (Wednesday 4 February) we had a meeting with community stakeholders and City officials to try and resolve the issue. But we are still looking for other avenues.”
In a statement the City confirmed the Town Two Clinic had been closed as a precaution while the City addressed an issue involving an external service provider.
“All clients have been referred to their nearest facility for services in the interim. City Health will advise the community once the clinic is set to reopen. The City’s Health Service Department has set up a mobile clinic at the Metro Police Department offices, Mandela Park, Khayelitsha.” He added the signage at the Town Two Clinic had been put up to inform clients.
Khayelitsha Health Forum chair Mzanywa Ndibongo described the incident as disgraceful. He urged the community to unite and protect their facilities.
“The City needs to take measures and reinforce its security at the clinics. It is sad that sick people, including old people, must walk long distances to other clinics to collect their medication. We cannot allow the hooligans to dictate to us.” The nearest clinics to Town Two are Matthew Goniwe, Luvuyo and Mayenzeke.
