Nyanga police are investigating a murder case of a woman who was shot and killed in a Toyota Avanza in Nyanga on Tuesday 2 July.
Provincial police spokesperson W/O Joseph Swaartbooi said the circumstances surrounding this incident are still under investigation.
“Reports suggested that the complainant, a 50-year-old woman, was a passenger in a Toyota Avanza on Tuesday 2 July at around 07:06. Unknown armed men fired gunshots at the vehicle fatally wounding the victim. She was declared deceased on the scene by the medical personnel,” said Swartbooi.
He said the unknown armed men fled the scene. He stated that the investigating officers will pursue all the relevant information to ensure a breakthrough.
Nyanga Community Policing Forum secretary Dumisani Qwebe said they are shocked by the incident. He said the shooting forced the station to temporarily close.
“We suspect that the shooting occurred near Zolani Centre and the driver drove to the police station for help. He parked the vehicle in front of the entrance in the police station. Immediately after the driver stopped the vehicle the passenger took her last breath,” explained Qwebe.
He stated that the criminals are declaring war against the community.
He said Nyanga is becoming a crime zone. “The criminals saw a gap in the community and they are utilising it. As the community stakeholders, we need to unite to ensure we close the gap for the culprits. There is a gap between the police, the City, community members and other stakeholders,” he said, adding that different groups work in silos.
