The Hawks dismissed rumours of someone having been arrested for the killing of Const Akho Ndzingo (30).

The policeman, who was stationed at the Khayelitsha Police Station, was gunned down while on duty at Q Block in Site B, Khayelitsha, on Wednesday 13 June. Since the tragic death, speculation has been rife on social media that a perpetrator was arrested.

The provincial Hawks spokesperson W/O Zinzi Hani described the rumours as unfounded. “There’s no person arrested with regards the case. Those were just rumours. The officers are investigating it.”

“An attack on the officer is an attack on the state.”

On Wednesday 13 June, provincial police spokesperson Brig Novela Potelwa said the reports from the scene indicated members of Khayelitsha Police Station’s Crime Prevention Unit were conducting a stop-and search operation in Q-Block at approximately 21:30 when they came under fire from an armed suspect.

“The police have since launched a manhunt for the suspect,” she said. “The police have opened a murder and attempted murder docket.

“The investigation has since been taken over by Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) investigators. Psychosocial support for the colleagues of the deceased member is currently being provided by the SAPS employee health and wellness practitioners.”

Khayelitsha Community Policing Forum chair Mbulelo Bambelo said an attack on the officer is an attack on the state.

“As we know that our police stations do not have enough resources. We take the officers as part of our resources. They (officers) are there to serve us. And by killing one of them you are leaving a void that is hard to be filled.”

He said that they will mobilise the community to fight crime. He stated that the community has a responsibility to protect the officers at all times.
