Ward 86 councillor from Strand, Xolani Diniso, celebrated his birthday in style by spending it with senior citizens from his ward on Thursday, 1 October.
Diniso, whose birthday fell on Tuesday, 29 September, had to postpone the celebration because of the mass shooting that occurred on Sunday, 27 September, at Kwa-Ndelu Shisanyama in the area. At least 10 people were gunned down and 11 others injured.

At least 85 senior citizens were bused from Lwandle to Zeekoevlei in the False Bay Nature Reserve, Pelikan Park.
Third birthday with the elders
Diniso (42) said it was not the first time he has spent his birthday with older persons. He described the senior citizens as assets in the community.
“It is the third time I have spent my birthday with the elders. This is a sign of appreciation for the role they play, not only in the community but in our struggle. We are here today because of them. Others lost their lives fighting for us to get the freedom that we are enjoying today,” said Diniso.
He said that besides the entertainment, the event also had an educational component. Various City departments, including Water and Sanitation, Community, Arts and Culture Development, and Epilepsy South Africa, were on hand to inform the seniors about the services they render.
Tense times after the shooting
However, he said the atmosphere has been tense since the shooting incident occurred, and that they were doing their best to support the bereaved families.
One of the elders, Nomaka Ndleleni (69), praised Diniso, saying it was the first time the ward has had this kind of councillor. She described Diniso as a people person.
“Since Diniso became a councillor, we have seen changes here. Our streets are clean; there are no potholes. When there are job opportunities, he makes sure everyone gets a chance. We are well led here,” said Ndleleni.
