A total of 133 people from Khunkqu section in Taiwan informal settlement, Site C, who were flooded during the heavy rains early this month, received blankets, food parcels and black plastic sheets from For Africa organisation on Wednesday 30 July. The handover took place at Fulani Community Hall in the area.
For Africa is a humanitarian organisation focusing on food security, healthcare, education and emergency response across the continent.
One of the beneficiaries, Viwe Martins, said they are exhilarated. He praised Ward 87 councillor Khayalethu Kama for being with them during the hard time.
“We are happy to see that there are organisations that are still remembering us. Ja, we are back to our shacks, but life will never be the same again. Because some of our electric appliances and furniture were damaged during the floods. But we thank them for everything they gave us,” said Martins.
Kama told City Vision the aim was to restore the victims’ dignity.
“We know it is not enough, but we believe whatever they receive today will make a difference.
“Last week, Wednesday 23 July, the national Department of Human Settlements donated building material to the flood victims. Today, also For Africa came on board. We are very pleased with their contribution,” said Kama.
However, he stated that the donation was a drop in the ocean.
