In an effort to encourage learners to become critical thinkers and boost their self-esteem, Iliso Care Society from Site C hosted a debate competition on Tuesday 23 June.
The event was held at Encotsheni Primary School in the area. Some of the other primary schools that participated in the competition were Isikhokhelo, Nolungile and Sivile.
Using debate to empower young minds
The Iliso programme coordinator Lunga Mvumvu stated that the aim is to educate and empower the learners. He said it was the first time the organisation has held such an event
“We are planning to do it annually. It is part of our Life Skills programme that we are conducting at Iliso Care Society. We are trying to mould our children while they are still young to become better persons,” said Mvumvu.
He highlighted that some of the children are becoming involved in wrongdoings because of their backgrounds.
“We believe that each child deserves a second chance. We cannot judge them based on the first mistake that they committed. Sometimes they commit wrong things because of peer pressure,” he stated.
Topics discussed
Mvumvu said topics for the day were the danger of social media, bullying and the importance of wearing school uniforms.
One of the judges, Asanda Mcotshana, said they are trying to build the leaders of tomorrow.
Learners encouraged to think critically and speak confidently
“We are preparing them for high school and to be the leaders of tomorrow. We want them to be able to stand their ground and speak for themselves. They must be critical thinkers. We want them to understand what is happening around them,” said Mcotshana.
Grade 6 learner Kayone Mqana (12) from Isikhokhelo Primary School described the event as educational.
She said they are encouraged to believe in themselves.
