Samora Machel police are investigating the deadly shooting of a 17-year-old female Sinethemba High School learner on Thursday 22 May.
Circumstances surrounding the incident are still unclear. The Grade 10 learner was gunned down at Oliver Tambo Street and it is believed was on her way to school.
Provincial police spokesperson Sgt
Wesley Twigg confirmed the incident. It happened at about 08:40, he said. “The officers responded to a complaint of a shooting and upon arrival on the scene they found the victim with a gunshot wound to her head. The victim was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel. The motive for the attack forms part of the police investigation,” said Twigg.
No arrests have yet been made.
Ward 33 councillor Lungisa Somdaka described the incident as shocking. He appealed to witnesses to come forward.
“It is a very sad incident. The crime in the townships is escalating daily. We are not safe at all. As community members, we are grieving with the deceased’s family. We want the perpetrator to be arrested. We can’t allow the criminals to dictate to us,” said Somdaka.
He said she was in her uniform preparing to go to school when she was ambushed. “The deceased’s grandfather said he asked her to buy something for him at the shop in the area. He said he was shot in the head while she was standing on the road with her friends,” explained Somdaka.
