Seven men were arrested late last night and early this morning in relation to the brutal murder of seven people in Better Life, Philippi East. They were shot and killed before their bodies were set alight on Friday 18 October (“Manhunt after 7 brutally killed”, City Vision, 23 October 2025).

They are facing multiple charges of murder and will appear in the Athlone Magistrates’ Court tomorrow.

The provincial police spokesperson Col André Traut said the arrests took place thanks to cooperation between detectives attached to the Provincial Serious and Violent Crimes Unit and Crime Intelligence.

“The suspects aged between 16 and 22 were traced and apprehended during a series of well-coordinated operations that followed days of intensive investigation and intelligence-driven efforts.” He said the arrests marked a significant breakthrough in the ongoing effort by the officers to stamp violent and organised crime out across the province.

The Western Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lt- Gen Thembisile Patekile, praised the swift and professional actions of both the detectives and crime intelligence, describing the arrests as a clear message to those who perpetrate violence.

“We will not tolerate ruthless acts of violence that destroy lives and destabilise our communities,” he said. “The men and women of the South African Police Service, supported by our intelligence capability, will continue to hunt those who commit such barbaric crimes down. There will be no hiding place for criminals in this province.”

A community leader from Better Life who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of harassment described the arrest of the suspects as great news.

“Yhooo so quick!” he exclaimed joyfully. “It’s news to me. I didn’t know that there were people arrested in connection with that mass shooting. Well done to our officers. As a community we need to give credit where it’s due. The officers did a great job. I’m so happy. I think the whole nation is applauding what the officers did.” He said the area had been tense since the incident and urged the community to speak out against any wrongdoing happening in their communities.
