The Gcayiya family from Strand is appealing to local businesspeople and organisations to help their child fulfil his dream.

Emmanuel Gcayiya (12) is among the rugby players selected for a tour to Italy this coming December.

The Grade 6 learner from Somerset West Primary in Somerset West will represent the country in an international youth tour to Italy in December. He was selected during the Riebeek Vallei Sports Tournament, held at Riebeek Kasteel Primary in Riebeek Kasteel from Sunday 29 March until Thursday 1 April.

Appeals for donations to fund Italy rugby tour

The family now faces the mammoth burden of raising R58 990 for Emmanuel to tour Italy.

Emmanuel’s father, Mfundo Gcayiya, said all he wants is to see his child being part of the team representing the country.

“The money will cover plane tickets, accommodation, catering, including tracksuits. What pains me the most is that I am not working. Only my wife is working. Even her salary cannot cover the amount required for the trip. I am asking any Good Samaritan to help my son fulfil his dream,” he urged.

A father’s pain and a family’s sporting legacy

Mfundo said what makes things worse is hearing Emmanuel tell him stories about friends who have already paid.

“That cuts me deep, that is why I ended up asking for donations for him. Emmanuel comes from a sporting family. Almost everyone in our family played sport locally. But Emmanuel is the first person to go abroad. And this kind of opportunity comes once in a lifetime,” he said.

He added that his son started playing rugby at school.

Emmanuel also plays soccer at the Young Bafana Academy.
