The Cape Organisation for the Democratic Taxi Association (Codeta) is expected to introduce its new electronic payment system, known as SA PAY, in its taxis soon. On Monday, 1 June, the organisation launched the project at the Kuwait Taxi Rank in Site C, Khayelitsha.
Codeta introduces SA PAY taxi payment system in selected taxis
Codeta chairperson Nceba Enge described the launch as a pilot project. He said the system had initially been introduced in only four taxis.
“On Monday, 1 June, we launched this new electronic payment system. We wanted our commuters to know what is coming. We tested it in four taxis, but the system will be fully operational by mid-June. We will be focusing on two routes: Khayelitsha to Killarney and Mfuleni to Killarney for now,” explained Enge.

SA PAY taxi payment system aims to improve commuter safety
He stressed that the aim is to improve financial control and ensure the safety of commuters. He urged people to remain calm and trust the process, adding that they are upgrading the taxi industry.
“People have mixed feelings about the new system. We need to move with the times. Trains and local buses are using the same system, and people are not complaining. We understand that most commuters are not familiar with it, and we expect some challenges, which we will address as they arise,” he said.
He added that cameras had already been installed in some taxis to monitor movement inside the vehicles.
Cameras to monitor taxis and taxi ranks
Enge highlighted that cameras would also be installed at taxi ranks to monitor activity on every route. He said each route would have a designated person responsible for monitoring the camera footage.
“Even taxi owners will have an app on their phones where they can monitor their taxis. The cameras will count the number of passengers entering the taxi. By the time the driver hands over the money, the owner will already know how much income should be generated because they will be able to monitor the number of passengers inside the taxi,” he said.
Commuters welcome the SA PAY taxi payment system
Commuter Unathi Sobopha (28) from BM Section in Site B described the initiative as a great idea, saying it is important to move with the times.
“It shows that the taxi association is changing and ready to adapt to a new era. We will no longer argue with drivers over change in the morning. We need to accept change. I see nothing wrong with what Codeta is doing,” said Sobopha.
