Philippi East police registered a murder case after the body of an unknown male, believed to be in his thirties, was found in Disa Road, Marikana informal settlement, on Saturday 13 September at about 08:30.

Provincial police spokesperson Sgt Wesley Twigg said officers attended the crime scene where they found the victim with multiple injuries to his body.

He said the victim was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel.

Twigg stated that the motive for the attack is yet to be established.

A community leader from Marikana, who refused to be named for fear of harassment, said the deceased was unknown. He described the area as dangerous.

“Maybe the deceased was robbed or was one of the extortionists, you’ll never know. People are killed here every week,” he said, and appealed to president Cyril Ramaphosa to deploy soldiers in the area.

He stated that chances of the officers arresting the perpetrators are minimal because people are scared to speak out. He stressed that even the community leaders are targeted by the criminals.

In a separate incident, Mfuleni police detectives are investigating the circumstan-

ces surrounding a shooting incident in Ekopoleni, Happy Valley, on Friday 12 September in which three men aged between 24 and 27 were fatally wounded.

Provincial police spokesperson Col Andre Traut said a fourth victim, aged 18, sustained injuries.
