I always thought that criminals were people who used force to take other people’s belongings.
I now want to believe that these are creatures or animals masquerading as humans.
What criminals did at A section in Site C on Saturday 8 June left me with a lot of questions.
How on earth can someone kill innocent souls for nothing?
Imagine venting your anger on a 5-year-old because you did not get what you wanted. How do you sleep at night knowing that there is a family that is grieving because of your actions?
The shootings in our communities are becoming the norm. The death of 11 people in Khayelitsha over the weekend left me with more questions than answers.
I believe we need a special force to curb crime in our townships.
It cannot be business as usual when people are dying like flies.
What kind of business are these extortionists pushing if they leave families bereft?
Our communities are becoming Sodom and Gomorrah because of unknown fearless individuals who are dictating terms and conditions.
We need to understand that police alone cannot fight crime.
They need our support. As communities we need to come to the party and assist the officers with their investigation by testifying against the criminals.
I wish one day we can live in a space where people can walk freely without fear of others.
I wish we could live in a space where we can learn to respect one another.
Now, it is better to live with animals than to live with human beings.
What happened to ubuntu? Black people have been known for their love and kindness. But it seems things have changed. We prioritise money. We are prepared to kill for money.
I’ve heard some people say money isn’t everything, but to others it’s all they want.
We attended a prayer service at the spot where the incident occurred on Monday 10 June, and I was touched when I saw a 5-year-old girl who had survived the shooting.
I listened to her grandmother narrating the story of how she survived.
She said the child was at a stall next door to the barber shop. She was reportedly with the owner of the stall, who was serving a customer when the shooting started.
The owner was shot in the back, but survived. She is among those who are in hospital.
The old lady said her granddaughter ran and hid behind the cupboard at the stall.
When the shooting came to an end the child came out crying non-stop.
To my mind, if she didn’t hide she would have been a mere statistic.
Sometimes I fail to understand why it is difficult for our government to curb crime.
If the government managed to control us during the Covid-19 pandemic, why is it failing us on crime?
Covid-19 demonstrated that our government has enough resources, but where are those resources now? If need be, the government must deploy the army to clean up our streets.
Well, what is it waiting for?
