Gugulethu police registered a murder and attempted murder case following a shooting incident on Thursday 2 October at a shop in NY 64, Gugulethu, where a 22-year-old foreign national male was shot and fatally wounded, and another 18-year-old male injured. The incident occurred at 19:20.
Provincial police spokesperson Capt F.C. van Wyk said according to reports the Gugulethu officers responded to a shooting incident at the mentioned address and upon their arrival they discovered the body of the deceased as well as an injured male victim lying on the floor inside the shop.
“The deceased sustained a gunshot wound to the chest area and the injured victim was shot in his abdomen. The injured victim was rushed to a nearby hospital for medical treatment,” said Van Wyk. He said the circumstances surrounding this incident are still under investigation.
“Motive for the shooting is the subject of our police investigation,” he stated.
A community leader who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of harassment described the incident as terrible. He suspects that the incident is extortion related.
“I suspect that the perpetrators are the ones who are going around collecting money from the Somali shops. Maybe they didn’t get it or the victims said something that infuriated the culprits,” he assumed.
He urged the officers not to leave any stone unturned. He described the issue of extortion as a major problem in all the communities.
