Scrap collectors are busy collecting the debris left after the shack fire at Briton Street in Langa. At least 11 shacks burned down and left 20 people homeless on Saturday 16 November. One person died during the incident.
Ward 51 councillor Lwazi Pakade described the incident as unfortunate. He said all tenants lived in all the affected shacks. “These shacks that are affected are for the tenants from three different houses. In room 22 five shacks burned down and left eight people destitute and all of them were foreign nationals. In room 24, there were four shacks affected, and only one person died, and eight people, including children left homeless. And in room No 24 there were two shacks destroyed by shack fire and left four people homeless,” explained Pakade. He said the cause of the incident is unclear.
