The Nyanga Community Policing Forum (CPF) condemned the killing of four people on Klipfontein Road in Lusaka, Nyanga on Saturday, 1 August, and urged law enforcement agencies to leave no stone unturned. Four people were shot and killed while they were changing a car tyre at about 21:00.
CPF calls for swift arrests
Nyanga CPF secretary Dumisani Qwebe described the mass shooting as barbaric. He called on the community to work with law enforcement to find the culprits.
“This is a sad incident. I’m thinking of the families of the deceased and how they feel now. We don’t know whether it was a robbery or the assailants were following them. But all we’re asking is for the officers to do their job,” said Qwebe.
He said Nyanga has been in the media for the wrong reasons for a long time and they are trying to correct the past. He stressed that the community deserves to live without fear.
Second mass shooting in a week
The incident followed another shooting on Monday, 27 July, which claimed five lives and injured one person at NY 50 in Gugulethu.

Police investigation underway
Provincial police spokesperson Col Andre Traut said Serious Violent Crime detectives have launched an investigation following a mass shooting in Nyanga on Saturday, 1 August, in which four adult men were shot and killed.
“Preliminary reports indicate that at approximately 21:55, the victims were travelling in a Toyota Avanza along Old Klipfontein Road when they stopped to repair a flat tyre. While they were attending to the vehicle, they came under attack by unknown gunmen who opened fire on them. The victims sustained fatal gunshot wounds and were declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel,” said Traut, adding that the unknown suspects had fled the scene and had not yet been arrested.
He stated that the motive for the attack is believed to be taxi-related. However, this will form part of the ongoing police investigation.
“Four counts of murder have been registered for investigation by the Serious Violent Crime Unit.”
