Learners from local schools gathered at Ilinge Primary School hall in Nyanga during the Showcase Festival hosted by iHlumelo Arts in Schools Organisation. At least 15 schools, including primary and high schools from Nyanga and surrounding areas, attended the festival.
The theme of the day was Human Rights Day.
Nyanga arts festival gives learners a platform to shine
Event organiser Nosisana Nama described the event as a platform for learners to showcase their talents. She said their organisation works closely with local schools.
“At least 14 of them are primary schools from Nyanga, Gugulethu and Langa. There is also one high school, Oscar Mpetha Secondary School from Nyanga, which is involved. Our programmes are aligned with the school curriculum,” said Nama.
She added that the festival is supported by the National Department of Sports, Arts and Culture.
Nama explained that learners are trained in various disciplines, including dance, drama, visual arts, choral music, and marimba. She noted that not all learners excel academically.
Arts programme helps Nyanga learners build skills and confidence
“This programme empowers learners by giving them practical skills. Some learners may struggle with academic work but are talented when it comes to hands-on activities. The programme also helps instil discipline,” she said. She added that since the programmes were introduced more than five years ago, dropout rates in participating schools have decreased.
A teacher from Nompumelelo Special School in Gugulethu, Noxolo Planga, described the festival as beneficial for learners.
“It is a great opportunity for our learners because they come from a special school. It is not always easy for them to grasp everything academically, but they learn better through practical activities,” she said.
A community shaping its future
Parent Vatiswa Mtsi also praised the initiative, saying it allows learners to express themselves. She agreed with Nama that some learners may not perform well academically but excel in other areas. She urged parents to support their children in whatever they do.
