A leader of the Nyanga Community Policing Forum (CPF) is calling for calm after a local taxi (iphela) driver was shot dead at the corner of Sithandathu and Emms drives on Thursday 22 May.

Nyanga CPF secretary Dumisani Qwebe said they are dismayed by the incident and urged the law enforcement agencies to do their best in bringing culprits to book.

“It is rare to hear about amaphela fighting each other and because of that we can’t suspect anything for now. Maybe it was a robbery, we don’t know,” said Qwebe.

He appealed to the amaphela operators to handle this matter with care to safeguard the commuters.

Qwebe stated that in most cases innocent people suffer when there is fighting among taxi operators. He cautioned against high levels of crime in the area.

“The officers together with the relevant community stakeholders are trying their best to fight crime in the area.

“We have our own strategic plan in place to curb crime. We are trying but the shooting incidents never stopped,” explained Qwebe.

Provincial police spokesperson Sgt Wesley Twigg said Nyanga police registered a murder case for investigation following a shooting incident on the corner of Emms Drive and Third Avenue on Thursday 22 May in which a 22-year-old male was shot and fatally wounded.

“According to reports, officers attended the crime scene where they found the victim behind the steering wheel of a white Toyota with gunshot wounds to his body. The victim was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel.

“The motive for the attack is yet to be determined. The suspects fled the scene and are yet to be arrested,” said Twigg.
