“As the community we need to go back to the old saying that says ‘my child is your child’. And always remember it takes a village to raise a child.”

Those are words of Xolani Diniso, who co-started a Shoe A child campaign, with Simphiwe Manqindi.

The initiative started five years ago to ensure every learner from Lwandle and the surrounding areas go to school with proper shoes.

Now a Ward 86 councillor, Diniso still champions the campaign and believes the need for shoes among children is even greater as most parents were affected by the Covid-19.

Diniso has called on businesses, taxi associations, churches, teachers, and the community of Lwandle at large to continue lending a hand by supporting the campaign.

This year the campaign aims to collect 350 pairs of shoes, which will be distributed to the six primary schools in Lwandle, Asanda Village and Nomzamo.

Diniso says activists and leaders of society visit schools to check their readiness for the year ahead, and also observe whether learners are properly equipped and attired, including with proper school shoes.

“In some cases you find learners wearing tekkies and many not wearing full uniform. All these things have a negative impact on the child and how they eventually perform at school,” he said.

“Sometimes a child is not necessarily bad academically but the social ills impact on them negatively. So, we are trying all we can to assist where we can through this project. Over the years the demand has grown, and this year is not different after the devastating effects of Covid,” said Diniso.

He said the group has received a list from teachers at different schools based on their daily interaction with learners.

Diniso said the aim is to ensure all learners go to school wearing proper uniform and believes the campaign has gained momentum over the years.

“I also need to emphasise that we don’t need brand new shoes. One can donate shoes that are still in good condition, and they will be greatly appreciated by the children,” he said.

Diniso thanked all those who have supported the Shoe a Child campaign over the years.

Anyone who wishes to donate can visit Diniso at his office in Lwandle.
