Some Bosasa Link Project residents in Mfuleni have expressed mixed emotions about their relocation to the area although they believe they are safe in their new homes.
They urged the City to speed up the process of installing electricity boxes.
The residents were moved from Phola Park informal settlement in Gugulethu to pave the way for the construction of MyCiTi infrastructure.
Resident Nokubonga Dodo said she is happy with the serviced site and a temporary structure.
Dodo, who arrived in the area on Wednesday 31 July, praised the City for the initiative.
“I’m so happy about my new home. I don’t have a problem with it. I feel safer here than where I was before. I have my own tap, toilet and soon the City will install electricity,” she said, adding that the fact that she has her own plot meant a lot.
However, a fellow resident who only described himself as Khusta, said he is not happy about the new temporary structures. He complained about their size. He accused the City of prohibiting them from extending their shacks.
“These shacks are too small, particularly for us who have big families. Imagine I had a shack with three bedrooms, a kitchen and dining room. Now, I find myself with my family crammed in a small shack,” he said. He also complained about the size of the yard.
Ward 114 councillor Enerst Madikane said the first group of people moved in the area three weeks ago and people are continuing to coming in. He said the project is expected to be finished at the end of the year.
“There are several areas that have already moved in here which include Phola Park from Gugulethu, other people are from Philippi and various areas from Mfuleni. The number of people expected to move in are more than 600 and only less than 180 people have already moved in,” said Madikane.
