Meat vendors from Embengweni in Town Two are pleased with the progress of the renovation of their stalls by the City of Cape Town. The first phase of the project started in April and is expected to be completed by the end of this month.

New stalls, shop, storeroom and toilets

The project will be implemented in two phases, with at least 18 meat stalls, a shop, a storeroom and toilets being built during the first phase.

One of the meat vendors, who identified herself as Madlamini, said they were thrilled with the renovations, which she described as long overdue.

“We are happy with the new project. The new facelift will make a difference. Electricity and water have been installed in our stalls. Our stalls are safe and clean. Even our customers will be happy,” she said.

Madlamini said the City had provided them with a temporary structure to store their belongings while the renovations were under way.

She promised that that they would take care of the new stalls and ensure that they remained clean.

Vendors welcome long-overdue upgrade

Community liaison officer (CLO) Mzimasi Malungisa said the project was divided into two phases.

“We are currently on Phase 1, which is expected to be completed by the end of this month. As soon as Phase 1 is completed, we will start with Phase 2. Everything is going accordingly,” Malungisa explained.

Fireplaces, parking and more stalls

Ward 93 councillor Thond Pimpi said the aim of the project is to improve the working conditions of meat vendors.

He said Phase 2 would also include the construction of fireplaces, parking facilities and more than 10 meat stalls.

Pimpi said the budget for renovating the stalls came from the ward allocation.
