Philippi East police are investigating a murder, attempted murder and extortion case following an incident on Saturday 2 August at Protea Road in Marikana informal settlement, Philippi East where a 40-year-old male was shot dead and another injured.
Capt FC Van Wyk, the provincial police spokesperson, confirmed the incident, citing that the injured man was taken to a nearby medical facility.
“The motive is believed to be extortion. The investigation continues, but no arrest yet,” said Van Wyk.
A community leader, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisal, expressed concern over surging crime.
“We are used to these kinds of situations. If I have a visitor, I must wait for that visitor at the bus stop, and we walk together, even if he or she knows my shack. It’s not safe here. The officers know about it,” he said, adding that it’s suspected that the deceased was one of the extortionists.
He mentioned crime and extortion as the most reported cases. He said many people left Marikana and went to other areas because of crime. He said people are scared to speak out.
