Philippi-East police are investigating a murder case after a 34-year-old man was shot dead in his vehicle at Sheffield Road near Vuyiseka Sports Complex on Monday 19 August. The officers believe the motive is gang-related.

Philippi-East police station spokesperson Capt Granville Meyer said no arrest has been made yet.

“I can confirm that a murder took place in Sheffield Road, Philippi-East on Monday afternoon where a 34-year-old man was fatally wounded. Our officers on patrol responded to a report of a shooting at the above mentioned location and upon their arrival they found the body of a male sitting in the driver’s seat of his vehicle with multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body and head,” said Meyer.

Pamela, a resident from Neva-Neva informal settlement, said they are shocked by the incident. She said she was in her shack when it occurred.

“I was informed by my 12-year-old daughter about the incident. When I went out to check I saw people watching at a distance. The deceased was driving a black convertible car. He was shot while he was sitting inside the car,” she said, adding that the driver had opened the roof.

Pamela said she suspected that the shooting was extortion-related. “I don’t want to speculate but the way they killed him is suspicious. The deceased’s car was very beautiful,” said Pamela.

She stated that she did know how the extortion could end and accused the community of hiding the criminals.
