CAPE TOWN- A leader of ward 86 in Lwandle says he is pleased with the progress on the construction of Lwandle Education Precinct, comprising a high school, primary school and pre-primary school, and that everything is going according to plan.

Ward 86 councillor Xolani Diniso said all he wants to see is children sitting in classrooms.”Everything is going well for now. We are expecting the contractor to hand the high school over to the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) soon. The primary school already operates. And the pre-primary will open at some later stage. Everything is going according to plan.”

He said the aim is to ensure every child in the area is at school. He stated that education is his priority.”‘tata Madiba once said education is the most powerful weapon which one can use to change the world. The population of Lwandle is growing every day. There are many children who didn’t get schools last year and others are on the department’s waiting list.” Diniso added it is the first time in Lwandle’s history that it has a pre-primary school. Bronagh Hammond, Director of Communications for the WCED, stated that after the opening of Masifunde Primary School the pre-primary will likely open next January.

“The primary school has 35 classrooms and associated administration, ablution and recreation facilities,” said Hammond. “The total project cost for the primary school is estimated at R92 million.” She said the pre-primary school is intended to cater for both Grade R and ECD (Grade RR). It has 10 classrooms, ablutions, an administration facility, a feeding kitchen and play area.

“The school will consist of five Grade R and five Grade RR (pre-grade R) classes. The opening and operating date are to be confirmed. It is likely to be January 2027.” Hammond added that the budget for the pre-primary school is R50 million.

Hammond said the high school will have an administration block, 30 classrooms, two science labs, a streaming hall, a multi-purpose/art-therapy classroom and media centre. She said the total project cost for the high school is estimated at R140 million.
