Lwandle police are investigating two cases of murder and two of attempted murder after four people were attacked in the Pholile informal settlement on Sunday 27 July.

A 41-year-old man died at the scene, while a 33-year-old was declared dead on arrival in hospital. Two others, a 15-year-old and 38-year-old male, were wounded in the shooting.

Police say the incident occurred at 21:39.

Sgt Mthokozisi Gama, Lwandle police spokesperson, said the men were attacked by unknown people in their shacks. “The suspects shot and killed a 41-year-old man in his shack. They then went to the opposite shack and shot and wounded three men. The three men were then taken to the medical centre for treatment. A 33-year-old man died on his arrival at the hospital. The other two are still in hospital for treatment. The 38-year-old-man was shot in the upper body and the 15-year-old in the left leg.”

Three cartridges and one projectile were discovered next to the 41-year-old’s body. Gama stated the police were hunting the suspects.

Ward councillor 86 Xolani Diniso described the incident as gruesome. He appealed to law-enforcement agencies to ensure the perpetrators were caught. “The crime rate in Lwandle is very high. Our officers are trying by all means to fight crime with limited resources. We need more police vans and police visibility on our streets. In most instances, people commiting these crimes are not from Lwandle.”

He urged the community to work with the police to curb crime in the area.
