A group of members from the Our Helder Early Childhood Development (ECD) Forum in Lwandle were delighted after receiving equipment donated by Ward 86 councillor Xolani Diniso on Tuesday 2 June. The handover event was held at Masifunde Primary School, with at least 12 ECD centres benefiting from the donation. Each centre received 10 children’s tables and a two-burner stove.

Much-needed support for ECD centres

Forum chair and principal of Bright Star Educare Centre in Nomzamo, Mandisa December, said the equipment had arrived at the right time. She commended Diniso for his support and commitment to local ECD centres.

“These tables are for young children between the ages of 12 months and three years. They are too young to sit on regular chairs. The stoves will also help us when cooking and warming food,” explained December.

Forum calls for unity among centres

She encouraged other educare centres to join the forum so that they could work together as a team. According to her, government officials are more likely to respond when ECD centres speak with one voice.

“ECD centres do more than just look after children. We teach them basic skills such as colouring, drawing and other developmental activities. It is a safe space for children instead of leaving them with neighbours or relatives. Children learn quickly when they interact and play with others,” she said.

Councillor commits to community development

Diniso said his office remains open to all residents and that he is committed to assisting where possible. He explained that the equipment was purchased through the ward allocation budget.

“We are trying by all means to ensure that all sectors within the ward benefit. This may seem like a small contribution to some people, but it means a lot to these centres,” said Diniso.

He described ECD centres as the foundation of a child’s education and stressed the importance of supporting them.
